Reporting the referendum

Sudan referendumDuring the 2011 referendum Fojo was part of a consortium that trained and mentored journalists in the North and South of Sudan. The consortium also monitored the media. 15 mentors were placed in media houses to support a professional coverage of the historical referendum.

Facts
• The referendum programme was funded by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
• The project was implemented by the Sudan Media and Elections Consortium, comprising the Sudan Development Initiative (SUDIA), International Media Support (IMS), the Arab Working Group for Media Monitoring (AWG), Fojo Media Institute, Norwegian Peoples Aid (NPA), and Osservatorio di Pavia.
• The 15 mentors brought experience from Egypt, Palestine, Jordan, Denmark, UK, Netherlands, Namibia, Sudan, Uganda and Zambia
• Apart from offering training the project monitored Sudanese media on a daily basis

Reporting the 2010 Elections

During the 2010 elections Fojo and the consortia partners placed 12 mentors at media houses in the North and in the South. The project was covered by Mia Bittar, an independent film maker, and the above documentary tells the story through her eyes.

They do the job together

Fojo’s in-house mentor Willie Oliver has been in journalism for 30 years. The Juba Post Sub-Editor Dickens Leju for two months. Together they try to cover the Sudanese elections as fair as possible.
